Inspiration

‘Nil By Mouth’ is a drama based on a domestic abuse storyline, which is extremely inspirational to watch considering I am creating a domestic abuse film myself. Nil by mouth was directed in 1997 by ‘Gary Oldman’ lasting a duration of two hours and eight minutes. “In a working-class London neighbourhood, a highly dysfunctional family struggles to survive. The widowed Janet, a former factory worker, has welcomed relatives into her home. In addition to her elderly mother Kath and her son Billy, Janet lives with her daughter Valerie and her abusive, alcoholic husband Ray. Together they attempt to work out their differences, but drugs, booze and violence get in the way.” (www.rottentomatoes.com Date accessed 08/12/2020.)

Access to the full film is on YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch Below are some screenshots I captured from the film itself. They both represent the Domestic Abuse scenario. Character ‘Ray’ is the abuser and character ‘Valerie’ is the victim. Domestic Abuse within relationships are portrayed extremely well in this film, the image on the left represents Ray building up his anger towards Valerie, all because she went to play a game of pool with her friends! The image on the right shows the aftermath of him abusing her. Ray had brutally beaten poor Valerie, so bad that she ended up in hospital. Unfortunately these situations happen in the real world every day, and films like this are great to raise awareness.
